Things to know about cleaning new systems

The prerequisite for commissioning the drinking water installation is that it is leak-proof and in perfect hygienic condition, as verified by pressure testing and microbial examination.

In newly constructed buildings, there are assembly aids and other auxiliary materials such as lubricants and threading agents, fluxes and soldering agents, sealants and adhesives, as well as foreign substances such as dust or chips. These must not get into the drinking water and must therefore be removed before commissioning.

The DVGW worksheet W 557 (german) must be observed.

In particular, the following procedure applies:

  • Preventive measures
  • Cleaning
  • Disinfection

Preventive measures

During installation

Cleaning before disinfection

Cleaning

These measures serve to prevent nutrients from entering the drinking water and thus deprive microorganisms of their food basis.

Disinfection

Disinfection can be an additional measure. This is only promising if the preventive measures have been observed and the cleaning has been carried out.

Application in practice

If the components are handled and installed properly, rinsing with water or flushing compressors is sufficient for cleaning in many cases.

In case of improper handling, e.g. contamination due to missing caps on components or use of too much assembly aids, intensive cleaning is necessary. This is where the intensive cleaning comprex® comes into play. The high shear forces mobilize those substances in the pipeline and reliably carry them out.

In the case of unexpected events, for example if extraneous water enters the drinking water installation, the causes of the contamination must first be eliminated. This is followed by intensive cleaning of the entire system by means of pulse rinsing, often in combination with disinfection.

For pipelines with nominal diameters of DN 80 and larger, flushing with water or flushing compressors is not sufficient. Compared to these pipelines, standpipes have smaller nominal diameters. To achieve the desired effect, many taps would therefore have to be open at the same time(DVGW Worksheet W 557). Therefore, water flushing requires a lot of drinking water, which must be disposed of as wastewater after flushing.

In contrast, comprex® cleaning is more efficient when water consumption is low. comprex® saves 80% to 90% drinking water compared to water flushing.
